This program offers flexibility, with weekend zoom meetings, self-directed coursework, and weekend meetings to complete in-person, behind-the-wheel sessions.

DE003 Traffic Safety I – Improving Classroom Instruction

This course is for experienced teachers who wish to meet New York State qualifications for driving instruction in secondary schools. The coursework prepares teachers to manage the organization, curriculum, teaching techniques, and administration of a secondary school driver education program. Emphasis is placed on the study of task analysis, methods, and materials for classroom teaching and practical instruction. This is part one of a two-part course that leads to provisional approval to teach driver education in secondary schools. (This course is taken concurrently with Traffic Safety II. )

 

DE004 Traffic Safety II – Improving Laboratory Instruction

This course deals with both an analysis of and practical experience in teaching the laboratory (behind-the-wheel) portion of Driver Education. The course is designed to provide learning activities that focus on developing operational skills for the novice driver. Emphasis is placed on laboratory organization and administration, maintaining a learning environment, developing laboratory instructional modules as well as behind-the-wheel, simulation and driving range teaching experiences. This is part two of a two-part course that leads to provisional approval to teach driver education in secondary schools (This course is taken concurrently with Traffic Safety I.)

 

DE002 Risk Management

Study of the fundamentals of safety, including the accident problem, and the societal impact, causation, and countermeasures of accidents. This course explores safety in the home, school, and workplace; recreational personal protection, traffic, and disaster safety. Special emphasis is placed on impaired driving, defensive driving, and attitude awareness programs. This course is usually taken after Traffic Safety 1 and 2 but can be taken out of sequence.

 

DE005 Problems & Trends in Traffic Safety

The last of the four courses in Driver Education Teacher Preparation Program, this course reviews issues related to current instructional, supervisory and psychological aspects of driver and traffic safety. Students in this course explore new resources and research, drivers with disabilities, professional concerns, the NYS Pre-Licensing Course, Driver Improvement courses and advanced instruction techniques.
